Wolfram Computation Meets Knowledge

The Student’s Guide to Wolfram

The Student's Guide to Wolfram

So… you got a Wolfram student license? Welcome! With Wolfram, you’ll find the tools you need not just for calculating your homework, but also for developing valuable programming and computational thinking skills to set up your career for success.

Accessing Your Wolfram License

Before you start modeling space debris or researching experimental medicine, you’ll need to check your Wolfram license. You can find out which products you have access to and activate your Wolfram ID by entering your institutional email.

If you are a student who will be attending a university or a program that has access to Wolfram products but do not yet have a school email address, you may join the Early Access for Students Program to get started. The program will grant you free temporary access to Mathematica Student Edition and the Wolfram U catalog, which offers more than 250 courses on using Wolfram technologies in different computational fields.

Getting Started with Wolfram Language

Wolfram’s core technology is built around using Wolfram Language. You’ll use Wolfram Language in Wolfram Notebooks. Notebooks are capable of performing just about anything, whether that’s calculating your calculus homework, charting the trajectory of celestial bodies or even writing this blog! For a quick overview of notebook functionality, be sure to watch Learn to Use a Notebook in the Wolfram Cloud and Learn to Use a Notebook on Your Desktop.

Wolfram Notebook interface

Once you become familiar with the notebook interface, you can experiment with the Things to Try resource to practice interacting with a few simple Wolfram Language examples. You will need a Wolfram ID to access this notebook.

For a more interactive introduction, keep an eye out for Hands-on Start to Wolfram Mathematica Training Tutorials from Wolfram U. This free online training session with Wolfram experts will review using notebooks and becoming familiar with Wolfram Language basics to run calculations, create graphics and convert data into interactive models. If you cannot attend a live webinar, a 15-minute recorded session is also available in the Wolfram U catalog.

The Wolfram technology stack is unique for its full integration and optimization for a massive range of computational fields. You can see examples of our specialty core areas and their key functionalities.

Wolfram core areas

Wolfram Language is not limited to just notebooks; you’ll also be able to incorporate LLM functionality using Chat Notebooks. Wolfram seeks to stay on top of the latest technology, including AI, by regularly reviewing courses to reflect modern expectations. You can learn about using Chat Notebooks for academic purposes with Wolfram U’s Back to School with AI Tools and Wolfram.

For the days when you just need to get away from driving the proverbial computational train, sit back and let Wolfram|Alpha step in to help with your studying! Wolfram|Alpha is a computational knowledge engine offering answers for research and computation curated from the Wolfram Data Repository. In other words, this is a search tool supplied with carefully reviewed data for your ginormous calculus problems and a succinct research guide for your history project.

Support and Community

Your Wolfram journey doesn’t have to be a solitary one! You can find support and likeminded computational thinkers on Wolfram Community, where you can ask questions about Wolfram tech, troubleshoot or share your projects for everyone to see. The site is moderated by Wolfram experts to ensure it remains a safe space for users to ask any question—and offer solutions too!

To find more projects and see Wolfram applications, be sure to also check out our other blogs and visit the Wolfram YouTube channel for behind-the-scenes looks into R&D at Wolfram, features from special events and livestreams from Stephen Wolfram.

As you become a power user, you may consider applying for one of the many educational programs. For students new to Wolfram who are raring to apply computational thinking to their passions, the Wolfram High School Summer Research Program is an opportunity for students to dive deep into modern computation and STEM subjects under the mentorship of Wolfram experts.

The Student Ambassador Initiative is another opportunity for outstanding students with Wolfram experience to join a community dedicated to mentorship, career development, special events and more!

See Wolfram Tech in Action

At Wolfram, we’ve always been committed to the idea of computational X, or the notion that possibilities can and should be limitless when applying computational science. The more you look, the more unique applications you’ll find in research, corporations, education and more. Our annual Innovator Awards and Wolfram Technology Conference are the perfect showcases of how creativity and computation come together with Wolfram.
